Certificate Program in Sound Design

In the film industry, sound designers, audio editors and mix engineers develop soundtracks for all types of media. Sound designers work specifically with dialog, sound effects and Foley. Mix engineers prepare all three stems (dialog, SFX and music) for a variety of release formats. In this 18-week intensive program, students will learn all aspects of production sound and sound design. From micing techniques on set to mixing in the 5.1 theaters, students will have access to our state of the art Foley, ADR and Dolby Mix Theatre while learning professional ADR, Foley and mixing techniques.

The Certificate in Sound Design is a lock-step program; students will meet Monday through Friday from 10am to 12 pm for theory classes. Scheduled lab hours are in the afternoon and evenings. The following topics are covered by the program.

On the first term, student will work production for a variety of student’s thesis films including a 16mm film project. Students will be responsible for recording actor dialog and capturing wild sound effects to be used later in the postproduction stage. On the second term, students will be focusing on the postproduction process, which includes dialog replacement, sound effect and mixing.

FEATURED MENTORS
 
Greg Curda

Greg is a Hollywood veteran sound mixer with over 75 feature films to his credit. He has 12 Golden Reel nominations, 3 Academy Award nominations, and one team Oscar for Sound Effects on Hunt For Red October. Greg maintains strategic alliances with award winning Hollywood craftspeople, producers, and consultants. In 2000, Greg traveled to Saipan to co-found Pacific Rim Academy where he taught production and postproduction sound. In 2004, he pioneered an intern program that placed island students on the set of network shows. Concurrently, he instructed in the Department of Film and Television Arts at Northern Marianas College on Saipan. In 2005, Greg co-founded and is Vice President of GEFH Entertainment Group, Inc., a Saipan based media consulting firm that, through strategic global partnerships, specializes in bridging the gap between Hollywood and Asia. Greg is currently on assignment with Bigfoot Studios and the International Academy of Film and Television in Cebu, Philippines.

 
James Sieczka

James Sieczka studied at Columbia College and now joins the faculty of IAFT after several years as a production sound mixer. He has worked on a number of projects including College Hill Interns and College Hill Season 5 for BET Entertainment, a Boost Mobil Commercial for KDJ Productions, Fear Factor Home Invasion for Tri Crown Productions, Fox's Celebrity Sports and the highest-rated premiere of an original program ever on a Fox Cable Networks: the reality show Wrecked.
